resurfaced!

sculpted the face more, added a belly button, more subtools, and wrappy thing around the shoulders. that selwy cloth brushes are the bomb~! still gotta get to his damn toes and sculpting the rest of the subtools. i'm falling behind. GAH...

resurfaced her too. yummy! resolving those edgeloops was scrumptious.

popped in her (finished) helmet and more subtool base meshes. resculpted the face which i realize is SOOORTA pointless because she's wearing that head piece but ah well. i like making cute faces. my plan for this one is to work out the hard surface armor later. i will do the gloves and turn her leggings into slim fitting boots for the body paint final.

...aaand some drama!

man, i had a nice ear sculpted and then the tablet driver stopped and zbrush was like "wtf?!-where's-yer-tablet?" dialogue box wouldn't go away to let me save it.

i picked up one of these bad boys this week...

yeah, it's meant for hard core WoWers but it functions quite well as my brand new ergnomic hotkey buddy. my left wrist was giving me a lot of problems from the funky angle of using a keyboard. i work with this thing in my lap, and it's sooo much more comfortable. i can work much longer now. my right hand's another story... using salonpas, tiger balm, wrist brace, ibuprofen and alternating between pen and mouse to keep going. i also took off the armrests off my chair, which turned out to be the very thing keeping the back of the chair up... so basically i'm sitting on a stool now. silly. ok, no more blogging. my wrists got a good enough rest from model/sculpting. back to work!

they're still mostly nude. sorry! awaagh... had some stuff i still wanted to work out. i'm trying my best to open up zbrush and maya every day and work on these characters little by little.

i started retopologizing the kid a bit. i only meant to do the face and reproject it but i was having fun learning how to use NEX and before i knew it, it was 4:30AM and BLAAh!!! (thanks josh for giving me the heads up on the $60 student price! super worth it!)

i like his pose a lot more here. dedecker said the giant feet are fine because it gives him more character haha. i'll be block out out his little accessories and hair during lab, and maybe reproject the new face topology too.

fixed her rack, softened her up and mushed around her ribcage and hips to get more interesting proportions. i tilted her face downward to give her some more attitude. decided she'll be on my back burner after all. she's way too complicated for the amount of time we have left in the term. WTF, it's week 4?!

spent almost all my free hours in zbrush for the past week making tons of mistakes and trying to correct them by going through scott spencer's anatomy book. my wacom hand is in a lot of pain. being stuck in that position for the majority of my waking hours must be taking a toll on the poor thing. it's a sharp pain in the middle of heel of my palm. anyone else get this?

so here's what i did since my last post:

taking a step back, it feels like her head's kind of big, but... anime heads are a bit big, no? hypo-head aside, i think the proportions FEEL a lot better now. remember this is all rough, but feedback is definitely appreciated. i had to throw on some rough armor and hair to give her more character. i'm already a lot happier with it than i was with the first time i modeled Webi.

now Gau! i hope he's looking like a 13-15 year old wild child. the original concept was just WAAAY too tall which'll make him like 10 heads if i tried to follow it. he needs to read well and look like a kid. his back definitely needs some attention, and i was a doy-doy and forgot to include toes in the base mesh.

i could sit here and list out everything i haven't gotten to yet, but.. meh. just tell me what ya'll think.

i'm redoing webi 0-87. can't decide if i want her to be bony/muscular or soft and feminine like the original concept. ah well, it'd be easy to change in this stage. i LOVE this design. it's definitely going to be a big fat challenge.

what do you think? not counting the gun, ya think about 20 different ztools? *falling over*

started in ztools to get the gesture and proportions i liked, but i gotta mess around with it some more. it was super late at night. ^^; maybe i'll probably shorten the legs some because her boots are gonna make her a lot taller and she's already feeling super long.

used this character as reference for a different body type than the original concept.

started blocking out this fancy little thing hawkprey designed too. i later then realized someone else had already awesomely modeled/sculpted it... which i won't be posting because it's too damn good. ;) oh well, i'm gonna continue to press on anyway. never modeled a weapon like this before and i'm learning a lot in the process.

some rough pen sketch ideas for the creature head we're doing in john brown's sculpture class. the concept i pulled out of the hat was "swine vampire." wtf?! yeah, haha. *shrug* after staring at pics of pigs, vampire bats, and wrinkly old men, this is what stuff came to mind...sketched these out super quick while we were going over everyone else's concepts. ^^; creatures are pretty fun to draw! i definitely need to explore this area some more. normally i'm more inclined to do cutesy or sexy stuff, so this'll be a good experience for me. looking forward to getting my hands back onto some clay!

today's my first day actually handling this chavant clay. the stuff's terribly addicting. our teacher told us we just have to get the 3 basic forms onto our armatures: head, ribcage, and hips... i soo badly wanted to go on, but i guess i just have to wait.

had billie jean stuck in my head the whole time.

if she's looking too thin to you, it's coz this is just her skeletal structure. don't worry, gonna add some fatty to her.

...and if time allows me, a hat, neck tie, and cuffs...........

gotta say.. all the homework i've been doing so far this term's left me feeling kinda blah, but after working on sculpture for about 8 hours, i felt energized and happy. :) i hope i'll continue to enjoy it for the remaining 7 weeks of this term.

these are my final images of those creatures we've been messing with the last few weeks. thanks to jerad marantz, he did a few extra finishing touches to make my characters pop out better. jerad and hong taught the best "analog" class i've had so far at gnomon. take production design II if you ever get a chance. :) SOOO much good information. it made up for all the disappointing classes i've taken so far. i LO-LO-LO-LOOOOVED this class.... and hope to sit in a few classes next term, if it's ok. >.>

this was a really challenging term. there were a lot of classes i wish i did not have to take, but on the bright side, it still got me to make art i normally wouldn't on my own. i know i complained a lot, but i had a good time and really felt myself improve a lot in my drawing skills. :)

now that crazy game character of that girl? i'm starting that thing over. i got the original full resolution version of the character design. i absolutely love it, and will try to do it again and make it as close to the original concept as i can. i know the tools better now, so it'll go a lot more smoothly. :)

so now what?

ha, i'm like... 10% done.

so the nekkid body's zbrushed and brought back into maya as a template to build up the base mesh for armor... only to be brought back into zbrush again.... only to be brought back into maya again ;_;! i'm pleased with the nude body though. i'm excited to retypologize it.

i'm almost 2 weeks behind because i'm trying to learn as much zbrush as i can so i don't have to take the intro to zbrush online next term. i don't want intro classes anymore. basic software knowledge can be learned in spare time. i wanna get to the meat. THE MEAT! gimme techniques and skills! i hope to score that advanced zbrush class for anatomy in place of the intro class.

so yeah. no more social life. HA, and on top of that, i'm starting a full-time internship during our finals weeks (well, most likely. it's not been official yet, but i keep being told it's in the bag). who knows... i may have to drop a class or two to hang onto this amazing opportunity. ^^; admin's gonna love that............. i can't just follow their curriculum as is. i gotta stir things up and force'm to change my schedule for me. what a troublemaker i am.

i f*cking hate nurbs (modeling with surfaces made with a network of curves), but the final product is not too shabby. i'm actually feeling a bit proud of myself! gonna texture this bad boy for a final for another class, so you'll be seeing it again today. i must say that i really did learn a lot from darrin's surface modeling (nurbs) class at gnomon. he's a fantastic teacher.

i'm feeling pretty good. i'm getting my finals done DAYS before they're actually due. finished my animation friday, and this one today. :) the hard part is over. my remaining projects are much more enjoyable! :D two final projects out of the way... four left to finish. 8 days of 2nd term left... then a two week vacation.

next term, i will run into the warm embrace of polygons... where stuff makes sense... where i belong. what class is this specifically? lucky lucky lucky me. as a 3rd termer, i'll get to take Character Creation for Games. WHOOHOOO! *happily swearing and throwing confetti into the air* that is my passion!

i went through a lot of monster energy drinks in the last weeks... i should probably start buying them in bulk at costco. ^^;

worth it to stay in the CG program? i dunno... i listed out the classes i truly believe will not be of use to me, and ones i feel would be valuable to my career. i'm leaning towards extension. i guess i'll make the decision by the end of this term... too many classes i don't want and too many classes i do.

i did it, finished in 3 days! sick of drawing roger. i was happy to draw a bit of mark and more mimi. :) if you couldn't guess, i drew the scene where roger and mimi find out the other has HIV during the la vie boheme song.

took a few days away from this thing to give my modeling hand a rest. sculpted her crazy abs and buffed up her arms and legs. also fixed some typology issues. clothes might take a while because they're puffy. i'm pleased with this model so far though. :) nope, still haven't popped this into zbrush. not planning on it either (i don't know how to use it yet).

i got sucked into looking up Final Fantasy VI fanart and thought perhaps i should do my own... instead of being too embarrassed and pointing out the obvious flaws in this drawing, i thought i'd post it proudly (for now) because at least i'm drawing. inked in ballpoint pen so it'll get picked up in my scanner since i drew it in non-photo blue col-erase. i hope to fix the flaws in photoshop... but i really like the look of ballpoint pen, so i dunno. could make use of my light table... whatever BLAH! nuff blabbing and excuses. that's my uncolored terra so far.

i chose ayla from chrono trigger.
she's a naked enough so you can see her muscles. finished her face... gotta do simple ears.
now working on her body. must add furry cavegirl clothes and hair. challenge... omg.... ;_;

assignment: clean up our scan data and use it as reference to rebuild geometry with a cleaner mesh that's animation ready. must reapply texture as well. our teacher said we could just model ourselves bald, but my hair's in the texture. i will attempt to model my hair as well.

modeled the left side of my head, but it doesn't look like me yet because i mirrored it and (it's grey and has lines all over it... and it's bald).
i guess the right side of my head looks more like me (it's cheekier). it's amazing how asymmetric my face is. i'll get to that side later and merge it.

Update! whew... that took forever to do. i realized i don't know if i can do the hair since it's textured into my face from the scanning. ears were the worst. i think i spent the entire day doing the ears... everything else went by pretty quickly. i still love modeling. i really do. my hand's killing me though. i'm not done yet, but i'll come back to it after i done with my character. i wonder if i can put this in my portfolio... :P

while posing, this model asked me "have you ever seen a model as skinny as me?" haha... i really haven't. most school's hire the curvy ones. this girl was so small. it was fascinating! it's fun to draw the meatier models, but this was a really interesting experience. there's a bunch of things i know i need to work on, like feet... but at least i'm drawing them now. i used to not draw them as much as possible. :)

btw, she's wearing tights here, hence no toes. boy, i was happy about that! ;D

crowdy~ i kinda like the idea for this one. i'll have to redraw this one again one day.

teacher seems to only want to see drawings of girls lately. the assignment was to simply draw a chick with a tattoo.
if you're wondering, yes.. this is the kind of tattoo i hope to get one day.

actual drawings! :O i've been afraid of showing people my drawings for a while coz i've been ashamed and soo out of practice. my teacher sorta helped me get over some fears and made me stop drawing with pencil. i'm not sketching anymore so my lines are more honest and bold now. i can't erase my mistakes. they're all there, and i learn from them so i am more confident not to make the same ones in my next. we had a few references to get away from our usual tendencies in style so we'd try something new. these are what i came up with over the last 5 weeks. :D

i used non-photo blue and had to hike up the contrast so it would show up on the computer. ^^;

i know these aren't the best. these are in weird proportions, anatomically incorrect, and the rendering's not impressive... at the moment, i don't care. i believe that if i keep going, keep observing and have fun while doing it, i'll grow more as an artist. :)
